Excavata: from (ex) a cavity (cavus) 

 Characteristics: 

  • unicellular 
  • capable of movement 
  • multiple flagella (2-4) 
  • feeding groove (aka the excavate) 
  • reproduce by means of binary fission 
  • may be phagotrophic, osmotrophic, or photosynthetic
